Firstly, as another reviewer has already noted, other than his name, George Washington barely puts in an appearance in this book. In fairness, if you look inside the book and read the overly long title it explains what the first volume is about. John Marshall is using the first volume to lay the groundwork for all that will come after. The author illustrates that the seeds that resulted in the revolution were there almost from the beginning of the country first being settled, and therefore the conflict was almost inevitable. The book will give you food for thought and the notes are excellent.
Is the book tedious? Yes, but there are a great many passages in Plato of which I could say the exact same thing. Yet many people still read Plato.
I thought the layout of the book was excellent. You can use the table of contents to navigate to any chapter. There are detailed chapter headings explaining the subject matter of each chapter. The notes are placed at the end of the book but each one has a link to the page it is connected with.

The life of George Washington Edward Everett 9781149451007 Books Reviews

This was an excellent book. However be warned! It was written in the 1800s, and it is in the old English language style. You will need to keep a dictionary on hand, because you will be looking up a lot of words. I found it difficult to read because of the language style, but I stuck with it. The author of this book actually met George Washington once.

I have read a lot about the Revolutionary War and George Washington. This book contained information that I had not found in any other book.
Fabulous autobiography by America's first professional writer/author
Lot's of good info if you're researching. Not the most enjoyable read on GW though.
A comprehensive account of American history, from an American colonial point of view. Vol. 1 has very little on Washington. Marshall starts with the opinion that to understand Washington you must first understand the world which produced him.
Written by Washington Irving in circa 1858. He retells the story of this country's first president as it has never been told before. Drawing on first hand accounts and interviews of sources who knew Washington, Irving does a masterful job of bringing the man to life and detailing the sobering circumstances that he faced when leading this country in its infancy. Not to mention that this biography was published only fifty-nine years after Washington's death.
This is really more of a history of colonial Virginia and the British colonies which became the United States, I guess to set the stage for Washington's early life which it barely covers. I will probably get the rest of the five volumes as Marshall is an interesting writer. I have another book of his Writings published by the Library of America and I enjoyed it, too.
Although I am an avid reader of history and have read a few biographies of Washington, including Washington Irving's, I was not aware until recently that former Chief Justice John Marshall had written one. Marshall's biography is a contemporary account from someone who knew George Washington his entire life, had served under him during the Revolutionary War and had shared the hardships of Valley Forge and had become an articulate advocate for ratification of the Constitution. He was this nation's third Chief Justice and our greatest, establishing the independence of the judiciary and prerogrative of constituional review. So, he had a unique vantage point, as a soldier during the revolution, statesman and a champion of the new constitution and government. His account of Washington's life and the larger events of the time are written clearly and concisely. He was a Federalist and his account of Washington's years as president are from the point of view that a strong national government was essential for the preservation of the United States. This biography makes clear why George Washington will always be our greatest president. A well written and definitive account, one well worth reading.
